Reduce Headaches with Magnesium
Video by Dr. Trenton Yeomans
In St. Louis Park and across America in the recent years the incidence of migraine headaches has been on the rise. The rise can be contributed to changes in factors such as lifestyle, environment, and increased stress levels. We as a population eat worse and stress more. The average American lifestyle involves working long hours, not getting enough sleep, or having poor quality of sleep with high consumption of processed foods and it all can contribute to migraine development. Increased stresses from work, school, children, family along with mounting economic pressure leads to increased tension and inflammation in the body causing triggers for migraines. Nutrition is a major tool in fighting against the inflammation causing migraines and one key mineral that has been proven to decrease the incidence of migraines is magnesium. In a meta-analysis by Chiu et al. they wanted to evaluate the research on magnesium and its effect on decreasing the incidence of migraine and the length or intensity of acute migraine attacks. St. Louis Park
They took 21 randomized controlled trials and what they found was intravenous magnesium and oral magnesium alleviated migraines on average between 15-45 minutes and decreased the prevalence of migraines from occurring. While most of us don’t have time or money to get a magnesium IV or supplements here is a green drink recipe with natural magnesium to help decrease the migraines.
“Intravenous magnesium reduces acute migraine attacks within 15 – 45 minutes, 120 minutes, and 24 hours after the initial infusion and oral magnesium alleviates the frequency and intensity of migraine. Intravenous and oral magnesium should be adapted as parts of multimodal approach to reduce migraine.”
