Lower Inflammation and Reduce Back Pain

As a Chiropractor, educating my St. Louis Park patients on proper nutrition is essential to lowering inflammation and helping reduce back pain. I have had a few long road trips recently, and I often look for different snacks and foods to munch on while driving.  As much as possible, I try to limit the foods to healthy snacks.  This is certainly not an easy task if you are limited to gas station snacks, as healthy options are often slim pickings indeed.  But, with a little foresight, you can be prepared for your journey with tasty and nutritious foods.

I have a couple go-to snacks that I look for when preparing for a road trip to stay energized, keep inflammation down and limit back pain.  Grass fed and finished beef jerky, trail mix, fruit, and the occasional protein bar round out my usual suspects.  I want to focus on the trail mix since the others tend to speak for themselves and don’t really require any preparation, just conscious choices at the store.  The same is true for the trail mix, but it can be mixed in a variety of ways and can be tailored for your personal taste.  The reason it is best to prepare your own, is because you know what goes in it.  The mass-produced trail mixes are often full of hydrogenated oils, processed sugars, candies, and other inflammatory foods.  The goal is to make it where you’re going and still be able to enjoy your trip, not feel pain with the inflammation that the unhealthy foods can bring.

I’ll leave a basic recipe below but 5experiment to find your own preferred type.  Just focus on the ingredients that you put into it.  Keep to organic nuts and seeds along with organic dried fruits not covered in sugar and you are already more than halfway to a healthy trail mix of your own.  If you make your own, I’d be interested to hear your recipe.  Until then, happy trails…and trail mix…to you.

  • ¾ cup almonds
  • ¾ cup walnuts
  • ¼ cup dried organic pineapple
  • ¼ cup dried organic tart cherries (no added sugar)
  • ¼ cup 82% organic dark chocolate*

Combine in bag and shake.  Enjoy!

*Surprisingly, chocolate can be healthy.  Just make sure it is darker than 70% for the benefits and lowered sugar amounts.
