Limit Back Pain

Video by Dr. Bryan Stephens

As a Chiropractor in St. Louis Park, I have a few go-to exercises that I try to do each week that I know will help limit back pain.  Planks, pushups, squats, and IWTLs are among my short list along with walks and runs.  These exercises help target many of the big muscle groups and major joints throughout the body.  Along with getting my heart rate up and doing the resistance exercises, it helps get many of my joints through full range of motion with resistance.  And, as I explain to all my patients, Hilton’s law requires just that to avoid building up inflammation which leads to back pain and degeneration.

Performing the exercises is just as it sounds.  Start from a plank position on your elbows, and once finished with the plank, pushup with one hand and then pushup onto the other hand.  Once in the extended pushup position, return to the plank position one arm at a time.  Alternate which arm leads so you can work both sides equally.  This exercise allows you to engage the core and upper body together.  Think of it as taking the plank to the next level.

“Core stability provides great therapeutic effects in patients with non-specific chronic low back pain reducing pain intensity, functional disability, and improving quality of life, core muscle activation, and thickness.”

Frizziero, Antonio, et al. “Efficacy of core stability in non-specific chronic low back pain.” Journal of functional morphology and kinesiology 6.2 (2021): 37.

“Evidences suggest that core stability is more effective than rest or no/minimal intervention and combination with other types of exercise for cLBP have shown grater efficacy.”

In short, core strength helps limit low back pain and this is a great way to activate the core along with the upper body all at once.  Try adding a few of these in to your next workout and help keep your body moving properly and limit neck and back pain.
