Green Smoothie to Reduce Back Pain

Video by Dr. Bryan Stephens

I often look for new fruits or vegetables to focus on when finding green smoothie recipes to share with my patients in St. Louis Park to help them lower inflammation that causes back pain.  I often forget to look at those recipes that add in different spices and herbs instead.  That was my find for this anti-inflammatory Green Smoothie recipe.  As I was looking through my spice rack, I saw the nutmeg sitting there and tried it in my next smoothie and liked it.

Nutmeg itself has been used for its anti-inflammatory and anti-thrombotic properties.  This helps keep the inflammation in line, but also aids the arteries and veins and helps decrease the incidence of blood clots.

“Medicinally, nutmeg is known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-thrombotic, as well as anti-rheumatic, carminative and stimulant properties”

“nutmeg has been known for its psychoactive properties, which includes antidepressant, anxiogenic and hallucination”

While nutmeg is not an essential nutrient like the omega-3, vitamin d3, or the probiotics like I mention all the time, it can still have a beneficial effect on the body.  In the end, the focus is to give the body the nutrients it needs to avoid an unhealthy amount of inflammation which leads to neck pain and back pain that I see all too often.  It also helps you to prevent chronic diseases through a healthy lifestyle.  Whether that comes in the form of a green drink or a healthy diet, the result can be the same…a healthier you.

Recipe
  • 1 cup frozen organic spinach
  • ½ frozen organic green apple
  • ½ frozen organic banana
  • 1 tsp nutmeg

Blend with water to desired consistency.
