Green Smoothie for Back Pain

Video by Dr. Bryan Stephens

Adding some spice to your foods not only brings an extra kick to the flavor, but it can also have some unknown benefits for your health.  Spicy foods and peppers similar to the cayenne pepper have a compound called capsaicin which is what gives them their spicy flavor.  Most of the research on the benefit of peppers is based on the capsaicin compound itself.  In fact, it is one of the active ingredients in a topical ointment I use in the office for patients undergoing muscle spasm and pain.  Topical uses have even been shown to aid with pain relief in those suffering with painful peripheral diabetic neuropathy when compared to oral neurotropic pain medications (pregabalin, gabapentin, duloxetine, and amitryptilene).

“For ≥30% pain reduction, the capsaicin 8% patch was significantly more effective than placebo”

Capsaicin 8% Patch Versus Oral Neuropathic Pain Medications for the Treatment of Painful Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy: A Systematic Literature Review and Network Meta-analysis. “The oral agents were associated with a significantly elevated risk of somnolence, dizziness, fatigue, and discontinuation because of AEs compared with placebo”
