Chiropractor’s Exercise For Back Pain

Video by Dr. Bryan Stephens

As a chiropractor in St. Louis Park, I see a lot of people come through the door with neck pain and back pain.  It makes sense.  It’s what chiropractic has time and time again proven that it helps in the safest, most effective, and most cost effective way (see the Meade Report, Manga Report, and New Zealand Inquiry).   It helps by restoring motion to joints that have not gone through full range of motion with resistance on a regular basis.  As they lose motion, inflammation builds which creates the pain people experience.  The chiropractic adjustment restores the lost motion thus lowering the inflammation around the nerve.  This is the underlying reason why chiropractic works (see Hilton’s Law).  Following the adjustment, exercise is needed to help retrain the body and muscles to allow proper motion in the joint.

One of the exercises that is helpful when building up postural muscles is an exercise called Supermans.  This is done by laying on your stomach with arms outstretched.  From there, you lift your upper and lower half of the body about 6 inches off the ground.  Hold this position for 2-3 seconds while continuing to breathe through the movement.  This helps strengthen many of the postural muscles and extensors in the upper and lower back.  It also helps with strengthening the glutes and hamstring muscles.

“[An] exercise program that combines muscular strength, flexibility and aerobic fitness is beneficial for rehabilitation of non-specific chronic low back pain”

Gordon R, Bloxham S. A Systematic Review of the Effects of Exercise and Physical Activity on Non-Specific Chronic Low Back Pain. Healthcare (Basel). 2016 Apr 25;4(2):22. doi: 10.3390/healthcare4020022. PMID: 27417610; PMCID: PMC4934575.

Combining the chiropractic adjustment along with exercises helps restore the joint motion as well as work with the muscular system to give the best results possible for future relief.  Motion is the key and proper exercises are necessary to keep you moving the right way to avoid pain and inflammation.
