Back Pain and Mental Health

Back Pain and Mental Health

To be able to take care of my patients in St. Louis Park, I have to take care of myself physically and mentally to stay healthy and deliver the best Chiropractic Care I can for them. I can do both while exercising. Exercising is a great way to not only limit back pain but can be a therapy session mentally for things like anxiety, stress, and depression. It allows us to only focus on ourselves and not worry about what’s going on around us. There are many studies out there with exercise and the benefits it has for mental health. If I’m feeling down the best way for me to get back up is playing some basketball or going to the gym and working out. I love walking and being able to get outside and get some of that natural Vitamin D. The research I have attached below is a great read on the physical and psychological effects of exercise and mental health. Some of the physiological effects are an increase in endorphins, body temperature, mitochondrial function, and neurotransmitter production. Some of the psychological effects may include a distraction from feelings of depression or anxiety. Here are a couple of quotes from the article that I liked the most.

“The physical effects of exercise include reduction of blood pressure, enhanced cardiovascular fitness, weight loss, and prevention of chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, osteoporosis and cognitive conditions like Alzheimer’s.”

“It is even suggested that physical activity can enhance mental wellbeing as equally as psychotherapy. In fact, just 20–40 min of aerobic exercise can improve anxiety and mood for several hours, although people suffering from acute anxiety have been shown to respond better than those suffering from chronic anxiety.”

Remember to always keep moving, whether that be working out or simply getting some fresh air on a walk. Whatever you do, always take care of yourself first to limit back pain and improve your mental health!
