Core Strength and Low Back Pain

Core strength and low back pain

When it comes to low back pain, or any spinal pain in general, there can be a laundry list of causes.  Not only do we need to assess how to spine is functioning, but we also need to make sure the supporting muscles that attach to those joints are also working the way they’re designed. With the low back specifically, the core plays a huge role in supporting the low back whether you’re an athlete, or you’re stuck at the desk all day, you need to have a proper support system to take stress off your joints.

The core function is so important in fact, that we test it during our spinal health assessment with every single patient that walks in the door.  The research is clear that proper core function is crucial for individuals with any sort of non-specific low back pain.  Look below at a couple key quotes from the attached research article which highlights the importance of having a strong core.

“Core stability provides great therapeutic effects in patients with non-specific chronic low back pain reducing pain intensity, functional disability, and improving quality of life, core muscle activation, and thickness.”

“Evidence suggest that core stability is more effective than rest or no/minimal intervention and combination with other types of exercise for LBP have shown greater efficacy.:

Remember, not only can pain stem from structural imbalances in the body. But other factors like stress and diet can play a major role in how our bodies heal and function.  So, it is extremely important that we make sure every one of our patients is eating well, moving well, and thinking well, so they can keep doing what they love day in a day out.
