Avoid Low Back Pain While Sitting

Video by Dr. Erik Waldeland

Low back pain is by far one of the most common complaints we see in the clinic, and many of the issues we see stem from postural changes and weak stabilizing muscles.  Extended periods of sitting whether its at work or while traveling, can be one of the main aggravating factors for individuals who experience this type of pain. Having proper support in the low back while sitting can help take pressure off the joint of the lumbar spine and help stabilize the small muscles in the low back.  This can act as a temporary solution to the problem if you struggle with pain in the low back, but proper mobility through adjustments and strengthening through physical therapy exercises are what will truly help eliminate pain and make sure that the pain doesn’t return.  Research shows that slouching while in a seated position may lead to increased risk of ongoing low back pain.

“A reduction in back muscle endurance could be an independent predictor of back pain. Individuals with chronic LBP have a higher pain intensity and lower tolerance to low-intensity static loads, as compared to healthy individuals, when sitting for long periods “

“Sitting posture can affect the trunk muscle activity, and different muscles are predominantly stimulated, depending on the sitting posture”

Postural awareness and body position can be one key factor in people getting out of pain and being more comfortable at work.  Our main goal is to ensure not only that your muscles are activating and holding your structure well, but also that your joints and functioning and moving sufficiently to support you if you are sitting for long periods of time.
